Drywall Repair Spring TX
Don't panic if you see a crack in the drywall. Your house isn’t crumbling.
Small drywall cracks can be normal and are often caused by the house's settling. They are also easy to repair.
This complete guide will show you how to repair drywall cracks without hiring a professional.
What Tools Do You Need
Before you start, ensure you have all the necessary tools.
You won't get far if you use any tools that you already have as "supplement tools" and you will have to stop buying the right tools anyway.
Here's what you need:
- Utility knife
- 6-inch Taping knife
- Mud pan (you do not necessarily need one, but it will make it much easier to apply drywall compound with the taping knife.
- Drywall compound
- Fine-grit Sandpaper
- Fiberglass drywall tape (paper drywall tape) is thicker and more difficult to repair visually. This guide will be about paper drywall tape.
Step 1
Clean out the crack first. Use your utility knife to remove any rough edges.
Step 2
Use a little bit of the drywall compound to coat the mud pan. You can apply a thin layer of compound to the crack.
Step 3
You will need to cut a length of tape that is long enough to cover the crack. You can also cut smaller pieces of tape to cover cracks that are irregular in shape.
Place the tape directly onto the drywall compound. Apply the compound immediately to the tape and then apply it as fast as you can.
It may be a good idea if you have a large or unusually shaped crack to tape the compound before applying it.
Step 4
Use the taping knife to push the drywall tape into the compound
Check for bubbles. You can create a bump on your wall if there is any air underneath the drywall tape. Check for bubbles. If there are,
Tape another layer of compound on top and let it dry. It may take up to 24 hours for the tape to dry completely.
Step 5
Add a second coat to the top. You want the compound to blend in with the walls. Do not layer too much compound, or it will push against the wall.
Step 6
Apply a third coat after the second coat has dried. Wait for it to dry.
Step 7
Use your fine-grit paper to smoothen the drywall compound. Be careful not to sand below the drywall tape.
After you are done sanding the patch, you can paint it the same color you painted the rest of the wall. Use a primer to protect the patch.
You won't be able to match the wall's color if you don't.
This is All You Need To Fix a Drywall Crack
Waiting for the layers to dry is the hardest part of this project. The rest of the project is easy and doesn't require a lot.
Do you have bigger problems with your drywall than you can fix yourself?
